3 Things You Should Teach Your Children About Dealing With Strangers (3)

There are a lot of things that you need to teach your children as a parent. They need to learn everything about manners, behaving accordingly, and also things that they can and cannot do. For instance, you should definitely introduce your children to the idea of who to trust and what people are considered strangers. It is never soon enough for you to have a talk with your children regarding strangers and how some people although they might seem good are actually dangerous.

First of all you should start teaching your children how a stranger is basically anyone that isn't your family or someone that your parents don't know. Some kids are accustomed to the idea of what television has taught them about villains or evil people, and they believe that bad people can't look like ordinary folks. It is of extreme importance that you tell your kids that a stranger could also be a bad person and that they should always be careful of who talks to them.

For that same reason, there are a couple of things you need to set things clear with your kids when it comes to strangers. You need to set some ground rules of what they can and cannot do whenever they have to deal with a stranger. If you are still lost and don’t even know where to begin with this conversation, keep on reading the following points to know what you should be teaching to your children.

1. Number one rule "Don't talk to strangers"

Very easy and very concise. Teach your children the importance of this phrase and see that they apply it in their daily routine. If you see them talking to a stranger, even someone you consider friendly, scold them and even go as far as punishing them. Let them know this is something wrong and make them understand how much they could put themselves into danger by talking to a stranger.

Of course you have to teach them to interact with others and socialize, and therefore let them know that if their parents are present they can be polite and interact with others, but only with their parents permission. Let them know that whenever they are alone, it is forbidden to talk to anyone that they don't know.

2. Don’t take anything from strangers.

Tell them that people might offer them candy or toys, and that regardless of what the prize is, they should never accept anything from someone that they don't know. Teach them to be polite and to thank the person, but to walk immediately from the situation.

3. Always tell your parents.

Teach your kids that strangers aren’t friends. They are not meant to be trusted and that the only one that they can rely on is mom and dad. Teach your kids to speak with confidence and let them know that with you there is always a safe environment to be very open about everything. Make it a habit for your children to tell you absolutely everything at all times. This means when a stranger approaches them, have them accustomed to the idea that they can't keep secrets from you and therefore they have to tell you.
